ಇಂದು ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯನ್ನೋದುವಾಗ ಎರಡು ವಿಷಯಗಳು ಒಮ್ಮೆಲೆ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಗೋಚರವಾದುವು. ಮೊದಲೆನಯದು ಚಂದ್ರಗ್ರಹಣದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳು ಮಾಡುವ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಯನ್ನು ಕುರಿತದ್ದು. ಇನ್ನೊಂದು - ಅದರ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲೇ ಕಂಡದ್ದು - ಖ್ಯಾತ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷಿಗಳೆಂದು ಕರೆಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಎಸ್. ಕೆ. ಜೈನ್ ಅವರ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಣೆ. ಅವರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಚಂದ್ರಗಹಣ ಸೂರ್ಯಗ್ರಹಣಗಳು ಒಂದೇ ಪಕ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ (ಹದಿನೈದು ದಿನಗಳೊಳಗೆ) ನಡೆಯುವ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ಇದು ಅವಲಕ್ಷಣವಾದ ನಿಮಿತ್ತ. ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಲ್ಲಾಗುವ ದುರಂತಗಳ ಸೂಚನೆ ಇದು ಎಂಬಂತೆ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದರು. ಇದೇ ರೀತಿಯ ಗ್ರಹಣದ್ವಯ ಮಹಾಭಾರತದ ಕುರುಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಯುದ್ಧದ ಮುಂಚೆಯೂ ಆಗಿತ್ತು (ಹದಿಮೂರು ದಿನಗಳು ಈ ಗ್ರಹಣಗಳ ನಡುವಣ ಅಂತರ) ಎಂದು ಮಹಾಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಗ್ರಹಣಗಳು ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಮೇಲೆ ಗಾಢವಾದ ಪರಿಣಾಮವನ್ನು ಬೀರುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂದು ಚರಿತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಾಗ ಕಂಡು ಬರುವ ಸಂಗತಿ.
ಆದರೆ ಇದು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಯೋಚನೆಗೀಡು ಮಾಡಿತು. ಇದೇ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷಿಗಳು ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ ೧೧, ೨೦೦೧ ರ ದುರಂತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮುಂಚಿನ ಸೂಚನೆಯನ್ನೇನಾದರೂ ನೀಡಿದ್ದರೇ? ಒಂದೊಂದು ದುರಂತವಾದ ಮೇಲೂ ಈ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷಿಗಳು - "ಆಹಾ ನೋಡಿದಿರಾ ಈ ಗ್ರಹಗತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನನಗೆ ಮೊದಲೇ ಕಂಡಿತ್ತು. ಎಂಥ ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷಿ ನಾನು" ಎಂಬಂತೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಬೆನ್ನನ್ನು ತಾವೇ ತಟ್ಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವವರೇ! ಇಲ್ಲವೇ ಸ್ಥೂಲವಾಗಿ ಏನಾದರೂ ಆಗುವಂತೆ ಕಾಣುವ ಒಂದು ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ತಾವು ಜ್ಯೋತಿಃಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಮೂಲಕ ನಿರ್ಧಾರ ಮಾಡಿದ ಹಾಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಒಮ್ಮೆಯಾದರೂ ಆ ಸುನಾಮಿಯ ದುರಂತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೋ ಅಥವಾ ಈಚೆಗೆ ಹೈದರಾಬಾದಿನ ಬಾಂಬ್ ಸ್ಫೋಟದ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೋ ಮೊದಲೇ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದರೇ? ಊಹೂಂ.
ಆದರೂ ಜನರು ಇವರನ್ನು ನಂಬುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇವರು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದು ವೇದವಾಕ್ಯಕ್ಕೂ ಮಿಗಿಲು ಎಂಬಂತೆ ಇವರ ನಂಬಿಕೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಸಮಾಜ ಹೆಚ್ಚೆಚ್ಚು ಆಧುನಿಕವಾಗಿದ್ದೂ ಈ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಅಷ್ಟೇನೂ ಪ್ರಗತಿದಾಯಕವಾಗದ (ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟು ವಿಚಾರಪೂರ್ಣವಲ್ಲದ) ಒಂದು ನಂಬಿಕೆಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಶ್ರದ್ಧಾಭಕ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಕೊರಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ನಾನಿನ್ನೂ ಬಾಲಕ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಮಟ್ಟದ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ್ಯದ ತಾಂಡವವನ್ನು ಕಂಡಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದರ ಹಿಂದೆಯೂ ಹಾಗೆ ನನ್ನ ತಿಳಿದ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, ನಮ್ಮ ತಾತ-ಅಜ್ಜಿಯವರ ಮದುವೆ ಈಗಿನ ಹಾಗೆ ಜಾತಕ ನೋಡಿ ನೋಡಿ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಲ್ಲ! ಆದರೂ ಅವರು ಐವತ್ತು-ಅರವತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕಾಲ ಸಂಸಾರ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಈಗ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಬದಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದಕ್ಕೂ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ್ಯದ ಉಪಯೋಗ! ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಮುಂಚೆ ರಾಹುಕಾಲದ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ! ಯಾವುದೇ ಕೆಲಸದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಗುಳಿಕ-ರಾಹು-ಯಮಗಂಡಗಳ ಪರಿಶೀಲನೆ! ಹಲವು ಹಳೆಯ ಮನೆಗಳು ಈಗಿನ "ವಾಸ್ತು" ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಕಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೂ ಆ ಮನೆಗಳು ನೂರಾರು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಬಾಳಿ ಬೆಳಗಿವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈಗ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಕಟ್ಟಡವೂ "ವಾಸ್ತು ಪ್ರಕಾರ" ಇರಬೇಕು. ಅದಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದರೆ ಯಾರೋ ಬಂದು - ನಿಮ್ಮ ವಾಸ್ತು ಸರಿಯಿಲ್ಲ ಅನ್ನುವುದು, ನಿಮಗೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಬೇಜಾರಾಗುವುದು ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳು. ಆಧುನಿಕ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ "ಮೂಢನಂಬಿಕೆ" ಎಂದು ಮೂಲೆಗುಂಪು ಮಾಡಬಹುದಾದಂಥ ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳಿಗೇಕೆ ಮೊರೆ ಬೀಳುತ್ತಾರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಜನ?
ಆಧುನಿಕತೆ ಭೌತಿಕವಾಗಿ ಐಶಾರಾಮವನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸಿದ್ದರೂ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಶಾಂತಿಯನ್ನು ಕಿತ್ತುಕೊಂಡಿದೆಯೆಂದೇ ಹೇಳಬೇಕು. ಭೌತಿಕದ ಆರಾಮದಿಂದ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಹಾರಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ರೆಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದ ಹಾಗಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದರೂ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವಿಲ್ಲ. ಹಿಂದೆಯಾದರೋ ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ನೀರಿಗೆ ಪರದಾಟವಿರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಈ ರೀತಿಯ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಯೋಚಿಸಲು ಸಹ ಸಮಯವಿರುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಈಗ ಓಡಾಡಲು ಕಾರು-ಪ್ಲೇನು, ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಟಿವಿ, ಮಿಕ್ಸಿ, ತಂಗಳು ಪೆಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಮುಂತಾದ ಉಪಕರಣಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲೂ ಇವೆ. ದೇಹಕ್ಕೆ ಸುಖ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಮನಸ್ಸು "idle" ಆಗಿಬಿಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ಖ್ಯಾತವಾದ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಗಾದೆ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಗೊತ್ತಲ್ಲ? "An idle mind is the devil's workshop". ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಇದೇ ಆಗಿರುವುದು ಎಂದು ನನ್ನ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆ (ನಾನೂ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರತಲ್ಲ). ಬೇರೆ ಕೆಲಸವಿಲ್ಲವಲ್ಲ? ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಪಕ್ಕದ ಮನೆಯ ಟಿವಿ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾದರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯದು ಇನ್ನೂ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾಗಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಹಂಬಲ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೆಲಸ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಮಾಡದೆ ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕೆ ಶೇಕಡಾ ಮುವ್ವತ್ತರಷ್ಟು ಸಂಬಳ ಹೆಚ್ಚಬೇಕು ಎಂಬಂಥ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳು ಬೇರೆ. ಕೆಲಸ ಆದಷ್ಟು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಆದಷ್ಟು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಭೋಗಗಳನ್ನು ಸವಿಯಬೇಕೆಂಬುದು ಬಹಳ ಕಾಲದಿಂದ ಮಾನವನ ಹಂಬಲವಾದರೂ ಈಗ ಅದು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿಯೇ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬೇಕು. ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಮತ್ತು ಇದಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಂದ ಮನುಷ್ಯಸಮಾಜ ಅತಂತ್ರತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅಶಾಂತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಪರಿಹಾರ ಬೇಕಾದದ್ದೇ. ಪರಿಹಾರದ ಆಭಾಸವಾಗಿ ಸಾಂಖ್ಯಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ (numerology), ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ್ಯ, ಮಂತ್ರ/ತಂತ್ರ ಮುಂತಾದವು ನಗರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕಾಣಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಪಡದೆ ಯಾರಿಗೋ ದುಡ್ಡು ಕೊಟ್ಟು "ಶಾಂತಿ" ಮಾಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರೆ ತಮ್ಮ ತೊಂದರೆ ಪರಿಹಾರವಾದ ಹಾಗೆ ಅನ್ನುವ ಯೋಚನೆ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಜನರ ಮೆದುಳುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇರೂರಿದೆ. ಸುಖ ದುಃಖಗಳ ಮೂಲಸ್ವರೂಪಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ ನಿಷ್ಕರ್ಷೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಜನರಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಿದ್ದರೆ ಈಗ ಕಾಣುವ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ್ಕರಲ್ಲಿ ಅರ್ಧಕ್ಕರ್ಧ ಬೇರೆ ವೃತ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅವಲಂಬಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.
ಒಂದು ಮಾತನ್ನು ಹೇಳಲು ಇಚ್ಛಿಸುವೆ. ನನಗೆ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ್ಯದ ಶಕ್ತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟು ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ದೋಷವಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ಹೇಳಲಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಸಮಾಜದ ಈ ಹೊಸ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದಲ್ಲ.
"ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಗೊಡ್ಡು ಹಿಂದು ಧರ್ಮದ ಕೆಟ್ಟತನ. ಕರ್ಮ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತದ ಬುನಾದಿಯಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಜನರು ಅದನ್ನು ನಂಬಿ ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೈ ಹೊತ್ತುಕೊಂಡು ಕುಳಿತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇದನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಸಮಾಜ ಉದ್ಧಾರವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ", ಎನ್ನುವುದು "ಪ್ರಗತಿಪರ" ರೆಂದು ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ತಾವೇ ಬಣ್ಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಒಂದು ಬಣ. ಈ ಮಾತು ಸತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬಹಳ ದೂರವಾಗಿದೆ. ಧರ್ಮದ ಸರಿಯಾದ ತಿಳಿವಳಿಕೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಜನರು ಈ ರೀತಿ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಜಾತಕ ನೋಡುವ, ಮುಹೂರ್ತ ಇಡುವ, ಹಸ್ತ ಸಾಮುದ್ರಿಕೆ ಮೊದಲಾದುವೇ ಹಿಂದು ಧರ್ಮ ಎಂದು ಇಂಥವರ ತಪ್ಪು ಕಲ್ಪನೆ. ಪುರಾಣಗಳ ಕಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ರಾಮ-ಸೀತೆಯರ, ಕೃಷ್ಣ-ರುಕ್ಮಿಣಿಯರ, ಶಿವ-ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯರ ಮದುವೆಗಳನ್ನು ಜಾತಕ ನೋಡಿಯೇ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರೆ? ಹೋದರೆ ಹೋಗಲಿ, ದ್ರೌಪದಿಯ ಮದುವೆಯನ್ನು? ದುಷ್ಯಂತ-ಶಕುಂತಲೆಯ ಮದುವೆಗೆ ಮುಹೂರ್ತ ಇಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರೆ? ಈ ದೇವಾಧಿದೇವತೆಗಳ, ನಾಯಕನಾಯಿಕೆಯರ ಚಿತ್ರಪಟಗಳನ್ನಿಟ್ಟು ಪೂಜೆ ಮಾಡುವವರು ಅಥವಾ ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಸುವವರು ಅವರಿಂದ ಕಲಿಯುವುದು ಇಷ್ಟನ್ನೇ?
ನಮ್ಮ ವೇದಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ್ಯದ ಪರಿಚಯ ಇತ್ತೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬಂದರೂ, ಪುರುಷ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಕ್ಕೆ ಬಹಳ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟೇ ಇದೆ. ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಜುಗುಪ್ಸೆಯಿಲ್ಲ; ಅದರ ಬದಲಿಗೆ ಆದರವಿದೆ, ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿದೆ. "ಪಶ್ಯೇಮ ಶರದಶ್ಶತಂ ಜೀವೇಮ ಶರದಶ್ಶತಂ ನಂದಾಮ ಶರದಶ್ಶತಂ ಮೋದಾಮ ಶರದಶ್ಶತಮ್" ಅನ್ನುವುದು ನಮ್ಮ ವೇದಗಳ ಉತ್ಸಾಹಭರಿತ ಉದ್ಗಾರ. (ನೂರು ಶರತ್ಕಾಲಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡೋಣ, ನೂರು ಶರತ್ಕಾಲಗಳ ಜೀವನ ಮಾಡೋಣ, ನೂರು ಶರತ್ಕಾಲಗಳ ಆನಂದ ಹೊಂದೋಣ, ನೂರು ಶರತ್ಕಾಲಗಳ ಮುದವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದೋಣ).
ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಯೋಚನೆ ಕೂಡ ನನಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಷ್ಟಸಹಿಷ್ಣುತೆ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗಿರುವುದೇ ಈ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ದೌರ್ಬಲ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವಿರಬಹುದೇ? ಹಿಂದೆ ಸವಲತ್ತುಗಳು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಜನರು ಕಷ್ಟ ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಕಷ್ಟ ಪಡಲು ಹೇಸುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಈಗ ಕಷ್ಟ ಬಂದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಹೇಗೆ ಎಂದೇ ಮೊದಲು ನೋಡುತ್ತೇವೆ. ನಾವು ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ ಕಷ್ಟ ಪಡಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಷ್ಟವನ್ನಾದರೂ ಪಡುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿದ್ಧರಿರಬೇಕು. ಈ ಸಹಿಷ್ಣುತೆ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ದೇಹದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಂಥ ಕಷ್ಟ ಬಂದರೂ ಸಹಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ರೂಢಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಗುಣದ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗುವಿಕೆಯೇ ಈ "ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಜೀವಿಗಳ" (ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ್ಕರು, ಮಂತ್ರ/ತಂತ್ರ ಮಾಡುವ ಮೊದಲಾದವರು) ಹೆಚ್ಚುವಿಕೆಗೆ ಕಾರಣವೇ?
ಅಂದ ಹಾಗೆ, ಎಲ್ಲ "ಪ್ರಗತಿಪರರೂ" ಹೇಯವೆಂದು ತೆಗಳುವ ಮನುಸ್ಮೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ರೀತಿಯ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಜೀವಿಗಳು ಪಂಕ್ತಿಭೋಜನಕ್ಕೆ (ಅಂದರೆ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕರೆದು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಕುಳಿತು ಊಟ ಮಾಡುವುದು) ಯೋಗ್ಯರಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದೆ. ಹಿಂದು ಧರ್ಮದ ಆಭಾಸ ಹೀಗೆ ಕಂಡರೆ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸನಾತನ ಧರ್ಮದ ವಾಸ್ತವದ ಪರಿಚಯಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವುದನ್ನು ನೋಡಬೇಕು? ಗೀತಾಚಾರ್ಯನಾದ ನಮ್ಮ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣನು ಹೇಳಿದ ಈ ಮಾತುಗಳೇ! ಸಮಸ್ತ ಹಿಂದೂ ಜನಾಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಆದರಣೀಯವಾದುದು ಗೀತೆ. ಅದೇನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ನೆನಪಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಹಿಂದು ಧರ್ಮದ ಸ್ಥೂಲ ಪರಿಚಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಜೀವನ ನಡೆಸಲು ಸುಲಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲಾದರೂ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಗಳ, ಮಂತ್ರ/ತಂತ್ರದ ಪ್ರಸಕ್ತಿ ಬರುವುದೇ ನೋಡಿ!

A couple of posts ago, I was wondering whether the benefits of fuel cells and Lithium Ion batteries overcompensate for issues with disposal and recycling. Looks like some researchers had the same thought in mind. Apparently wind and geo-thermal energy make the cut as really "green" alternative energy sources. Solar looks OK too. None of the others make the grade, though.

Happy Independence Day!
Note: This was written yesterday.
This is the 60th anniversary of Indian Independence. On this occasion, let's all wish each other and our country a happy Independence Day!
But the cynic in me had questions. What did we celebrate? This was the day the British transferred power to Indian representatives. This is the day when our own people began governing our country. After August 15, 1947 we could have have our own flag, our own army and so many our own things. Apart from the army, these are mainly symbolic and I acknowledge the power of "mere" symbols. And of course, Britain gave India up as she couldn't govern India any more.
But if we look at it from the level of a citizen, we have to ask : independence from whom? Is it just political independence? If so, we see corrupt electoral practices during every election. So does each citizen get to really choose his or her representative? If it is economic independence, the whole world is interdependent. Did we or did we not have it during the British rule at the level of a citizen? Has anything changed for the citizen? Sometimes, I see a few positive things , but then I think, wouldn't these have still happened if the British had continued to rule India? For example, I am sure several old Mysoreans still rank the quality of life under the Maharaja higher than life in "independent" India, whatever that means.
In fact some things changed for the worse immediately after independence. The whole socialist regime under Nehru and his daughter stunted the country's economic prosperity. It has been only recently (91 onwards) that a positive change has come over the country. Read "India Unbound" by Gurcharan Das for a great account of that "unbinding" of India.
Earlier we had the British make "business" decisions while India suffered (e.g millions dead because of artificial famines in Bengal and all over the country). Now we have parochial and/or corrupt leaders who either consume most or all of the resources meant for the poor citizens, who are still forced to live in poverty. So, has the citizen seen better times? At least we had less corrupt politicians in the British age and bureaucrats were still selected based on merit. Much unlike today where populism and vulgar campaigning hold sway. We managed to substitute a foreign evil for a local one, that's all.
With a puppet Prime Minister and puppet President "ruling" the country, this day seemed to be just a mockery.
I can't allow the cynic in me to hold forth as he can be pretty depressing (even to me).
And so for a different picture I saw earlier today.
Children in spotless white uniforms marched enthusiastically on the streets to the rhythm of drum beats shouting "Vande Mataram" and "Bharat mata ki jai". A few of them proudly held the tricolour aloft as they marched with smiles that would warm the cockles of the coldest cynic. Their teachers could not keep up with them, such was the childish enthusiasm. The teachers were probably infected by the children. They had smiles on their face too! How different was this from the faces of the clueless onlookers who thought of this march of at best, a nuisance! Cars continued to honk as they were interrupted on their way for a few seconds. But this group was not deterred. Herded by the watchful eyes of their gurus, the children walked along the street with their bright excitement still unblemished.
We get grim news on TV every day. We think about the future of the country to be in jeopardy. These thoughts cloud us almost all the time. But such days as the independence day that can extract just a "Bah! Humbug!" from cynics can also be transformed to really glorious days because of such examples. Innocent children can really change many things!
Finally, the cynic and non-cynic in me concur for the conclusion. In spite of secessionist forces, diverse cultures and religions, rampant corruption and inept leadership, Mother India not only is surviving but also thriving. And that is the greatest miracle I've seen. While several nay-sayers have referred to India over the years as a "functioning anarchy", the focus, in my opinion, in that phrase should be on "functioning" rather than on "anarchy".

Offending religious groups
Why are we so scared of offending Muslims? - By Christopher Hitchens - Slate Magazine

It is common knowledge that a sword, regardless of who it is used by, cuts. So, when people who shout their throats hoarse at perceived slights indulge in acts hostile to other groups, they should understand that they will be paid back in their own currency.
Several communities all over the world are taking these "perceived" slights very seriously. In some cases, they may be warranted, but in most they are blown out of proportion.
For example is the "Anu deva" book controversy in Karnataka. I know that this book contains some apparently disrespecting observations about Sri Basaveshwara, one of the foremost reformers of Karnataka. But what I really know is that the veerashaiva lobby in Karnataka is perceived as one of the most powerful and that anyone going against it will be penalized.
Hindu icons have been put on sandals and slippers and toilet seats, which have then been withdrawn after sufficient activism. As a Hindu, I did feel offended at these acts. I probably did write a post or two about it. But if some one had asked me to walk on the road in a procession protesting it, I don't know if I would have done it - because, who would I be showing this to? It would definitely not be to hold up traffic in Bangalore! I suppose the amount of shrill rhetoric in the matter would have determined the course of my action.
It somewhat seems that this victim/oppressor game is being played at all places in the world stage. They themselves are always victims whereas the other party becomes the oppressors. In the Hindu/Muslim case, Hindus feel that they are the victims because Muslim rulers are historically known to have destroyed several thousand temples and killed millions of Hindus. Muslims on the other hand feel that what was rightfully theirs now belongs to the "kafirs" - who even went to the extent of destroying their masjid. Their gripe is also that they are being targeted by the Government and other groups solely account of their religion. Also, the fact that Hindus are "idol"-worshippers and are not "people of the book" is another, albeit smaller, reason.
Another example: The USA is playing victim after September 11 and the larger Muslim world feels victimized (sometimes rightly, I feel) most of the time.
This victim/oppressor game is a dangerous one. Also, it looks like all groups are in unison as far as the remedial measures go. The remedy as each group sees it would be to completely subdue the "oppressor" a la David subduing Goliath. And this is a dangerous trend.
The only remedy, as I see it, is the practice of "live and let live" by everybody, all the groups. When people start seeing each other as human beings and not as ideological enemies, this world will become a better place.
I suppose all groups know this simple fact. But the irony is that they don't want to be the first to adopt that world view.

Piracy more serious than burglary?

Ars Technica is one of the premier technology sites. They carried this thought-provoking editorial that talks of an attempt by a lawyer for a prominent media enterprise to make the US government consider intellectual property theft as more serious than "real" theft.
Isn't it really ridiculous for somebody to even think of say, an armed burglary involving assault as less serious than a bootlegged bad movie? This is where the corporates are bad. While capitalism and corporates are good for the economy and all that, this is one area that is safely handled by the judicial arm of the government.
I agree that copyright infringement is a serious issue. It should be punished severely. But please do not underestimate the seriousness of crimes such as armed robberies and frauds such as Vinivinc. The latter crimes can be "lesser" only if the amounts of money lost in either crime are compared. But is money everything?
