Sena's wisdom: Girls are asking for it - Newindpress.com

Sena's wisdom: Girls are asking for it - Newindpress.com

The Shiv Sena is nuts! They don't understand Indian Cultural values at all and yet they try to police it!

Dressing that way (provocatively) is definitely not good - but that is not the main reason. The cultural degradation and depraved nature belong to the men who perpetrate such crimes.

In fact Manu-smriti says - yatra nAryastu pUjyante ramante tatra devatAH. Gods dwell happily wherever women are worshipped. That in a nut shell explains Hindu Culture. Assaulting women is definitely not worshipping them. Just because girls dress that way, can they be treated in whatever way?

kAma is a puruShArtha in the Indian Cultural system. It has been most unfortunately translated as lust into English. Indian Culture tended to be more open than the present American cultures. European culture now is depraved. Indian Culture believes more in a balance.

If we just look at the sculptures in temples, we can understand the view Ancient Indian Culture had towards this much tabooed kAma. Indian Culture did not encourage an open exhibition of such acts - but neither did it discourage it. Satisfaction of desires had to take place within the system of marriage. Second and third marriages were done for the same reason. Balance was the order of the day.

Islamic and Victorian mores have changed the Indian perception too. Indian people tend to be too frigid and timid when it comes to these matters. Some people are going to the other extreme, though, because of the blind aping of the West - which, feeling repressed for quite sometime, has broken the shackles violently.

Buddha's suvarNa-madhyama-mArga (The Golden middle path) applies here too. Krishna in the gItA also says - ati sarvatra varjayet (Excesses everywhere should be cast away). Extreme denial is not good. An excess of enjoyment is not good either.

There is a wonderful book in Kannada which deals with this topic. It is called kAma - ondu puruShArtha. It is by a Samskrit expert - Prof VK HampihoLi. I just went through the introduction and it is an illuminating read. Books like that should be read by our people to understand what exactly constitutes a healthy attitude towards these matters.

I am not mentioning the word as I am writing this from within work ! ;-)

Technology trickling down

The Hindu : Karnataka News : Low-cost, hi-tech diagnosis

Isn't this wonderful ? It is a pretty simple idea - in fact, too simple. Why, anyone can do that ! This doctor uses a cell phone camera to take pictures of his patients' X-Ray and sends it to his friends in the US if he cannot decipher it himself.

I assume the good doctor's friends are working gratis. This is what would happen in an ideal world with people helping others free of all other considerations. But I wonder how the hospitals in the US and Europe view this. Would the doctors be guilty (According to me, they are not, but...) of helping other patients which would be against a hospital's employment policies?

I also assume that the good doctor is charging his patients less. From the article at least, this seems to be the case.

Till a couple of years ago, no camera phones could be seen in India. Ten years ago, I wonder if there were so many cell phones in India or if there were cell phones at all. Now, all that has changed. These changes have also changed the lives of several poor people - who could never dream of affording such health care.

This is a wonderful case of technology trickling down to the masses. The Leftist naysayers and misguided Gandhians who did not want anything closely resembling progress to reach the people have been made to eat humble pie. Wonderful to see how different aspects of human ingenuity have come and worked together for everybody's benefit.

I suppose I have ranted enough now! May the tribe of people like the doctor here increase!

Einstein's centenary year

Its Alberts world. We just live in it. - - MSNBC.com

Nice article. We definitely understand the importance of Einstein's contributions - but owing everything to Einstein is a quite a stretch. He provided seminal contributions to Physics by propounding the theory of Relativity and explaining the PhotoElectric effect, while not exactly being close to Quantum Mechanics.

But sometimes I wonder, Einstein or any other great man is a product of his times. Why, even Isaac Newton, whose intellectual achievements far outstrip any other scientist, said that he stood on the shoulders of giants!

Einstein was definitely great - but Newton far greater. In Newton's time (for a good book on Newton read James Gleick's biography of Newton), there was no scientific temper and theology ruled peoples' minds. Newton was also from the relatively intellectually backward England (at that time (1642) it definitely was just coming out of the dark ages). His achievements in the face of all such odds are some of the greatest that can be attributed to a human mind.

Going to another thought, if Newton or Einstein had not discovered what they are famous far, I am sure some one or the other would have done the same thing at around the same time. For example - Leibniz had 'invented' Calculus independent of Newton and Planck would have come around to use the Quantum Theory to explain the Photo Electric effect. Also Einstein's formulations were based on the work of Lorentz and Minkowski. So I am sure some one or the other would have discovered what Einstein and Newton did and we would be singing their glories now.

I, however, see these celebrations of centenaries and anniversaries as the celebrations of Human Achievement, as an ode to the indefatigable Human Spirit, which always takes us somewhere. Looking at that spirit, all I can do is to marvel at it and be grateful for being a part of it.

But the author of the article laments the fact that an Einstein would not be recognized today as Science has become a bureaucratic enterprise with peer-reviewed journals and professional politics. I tend to agree with the author here. Another thing is that science has 'advanced' to a stage where it would be impossible to do anything significant without a grant from the government - which would again be based on a scientist's tangible achievements rather than his innate ability to discover and theorize.

I end by repeating that we should all recognize these celebrations as not those glorifying certain individuals but as those glorifying the human spirit and humankind which thrives in the face of its own foibles.

BMTC demarcates routes for Volvo buses - Deccan Herald - Internet Edition

BMTC demarcates routes for Volvo buses - Deccan Herald - Internet Edition

This is welcome news for somebody like me. I commute by car everyday to work and that is really a pain. I also get bothered because doing as I do pollutes the environment further and I end up guilty.

With this step, some volvo buses will be used in the route I use (for at least half) and this will benefit me a lot as it will save money and the environment.

Waiting for this eagerly.
