Satya Sai Baba and vAstu

Satya Sai Baba (SSB) passed away yesterday. SSB's doctors made his passage difficult with pacemakers and other life support added on - but his sharIra, whose nature it is to die and decay, had to give way. He was eighty five years old.

With anybody else, 85 can safely be considered a ripe old age. However, with Baba - the center of so much of power and opulence, any age would not be ripe enough.

A family member of Satya Sai Baba lamented that the hospital where he (SSB) was treated had "vAstu doSham"! When I read this statement - I could not make up my mind whether to laugh or to cry.

I do not wish to pontificate here - but merely want to point out the obvious. Our bodies - strong as they may be now - will eventually wither away. That is the nature of life. Whether eighty or hundred or even a hundred and ten years old - no one will live forever. It is quite amazing that this family member of SSB could not get that - in spite of the high philosophy that SSB regularly had in his lectures and speeches.

At these times, it helps to look at our purANas and itihAsa and get a grip on ourselves. Great avatAras like rAma and kRShNa gave up their bodies when it was time. Great personages like bhIShma and dharmarAja passed away too. And so did kings like shivAji and kRshNadevarAya. When they passed away however, they understood their conditions and adjusted. No illustrious personage departed kicking and weeping like a five year old.

In fact the Raghuvamsha has a phrase about this - yogenAnte tanutyajAm ("The kings of the ikShvAku dynasty gave up their bodies with yoga"). They "gave it up".

My lament is that our people are not looking at the stars in our purANic sky. They are looking at the muck and dirt - in the form of vAstu and other sick superstitions. To answer this family member - would SSB have lived forever if they had shifted him to a "vAstu" compliant hospital? Read kisA gotami's story, people!

I sometimes feel that atheism is better than this kind of belief. I read an interesting piece about SSB's and H Narasimhaiah's exchange on Outlook India here. While I do not agree with Outlook's ideology, this piece has an interesting part from the same piece that I would like to quote. [Emphases in the following paragraphs mine]

Now science seems to have been replaced by technology in the public
space
. Obviously one can't speak of the values of technology as one
spoke about that of science because there aren't any. Technology is only
about application and consumption and it suits the times well.
It is
ideologically neutral. I am tempted to say that as more and more
technology surrounds us, our pre-occupation with dogma and godmen has increased
.
With that point to ponder, I conclude this post with my (hopefully unfounded) observation that as a society, we seem to be heading downhill - morally and spiritually - in a high powered fully featured sports car with all cylinders firing.

SL Bhyrappa's sAkshi - a quick reflection

"dharmAviruddho bhuteShu kAmo.asmi bharatarShabha"
(O bull among the bharatas, I am kAma not opposed to Dharma in all beings)
declares the Lord in the bhagavadgItA. kAma and dharma are fundamental puruShArthas in the Indian psyche. It is easy to understand why Krishna qualified kAma with the additional adjunct of not being against Dharma. But still, in this age, when kAma and the artha are the more favored and attractive puruShArthas, sAkShi - Bhyrappa's novel, underscores the importance of Dharma and sounds a sobering note to those solely focused on the the second and third values of life.

sAkShi (English: witness) is in my opinion, Bhyrappa's most explosive novel. AvaraNa might be more controversial and tantu or parva more voluminous and philosophical. But no other book I have read recently packs profound, even mind-blowing philosophical questions with such a complex but gripping story line. Written in 1986, it is puzzling to me that this title is not on the lips of people. Bhyrappa is more identified with Parva, vamshavrikSha, dharmashrI and more recently with AvaraNa - but never so much with sAkShi.

sAkShi - the novel - is on a different plane altogether. While most of his other novels are mostly bound in a definite time and place, for example dATu (post-independent rural India) or tantu (India during emergency), or even Parva (mahAbhArata age) sAkShi with a few changes can easily transcend space and time, for, the concerns it raises are universally human. It is not that the others I mentioned lack parts of timelessness - but that this novel when stripped of its particulars can be equally at home with ancient India or with even modern America or medieval Europe. And it would be quite easy to strip them out lending itself quite well to an English adaptation (not just translation).

sAkShi also marks the creation of a great character, from a literary perspective - Manjayya. More about him later.

Some words of caution : sAkShi is not for the weak stomached. For example, I would shudder to share it with some one who is puritanical minded or some one who has just started reading.  People with Victorian mores are to be shooed away from this book.

The story begins and ends with a unique plot-device - discussions in the judgement court of Yama, the Supreme controller and arbiter in the Hindu puranic realm. It sounds fanciful, but does not come across as such and ends up enhancing the appeal of the novel. The novel begins with a dead soul in the court of Yamadharma narrating the conditions of its suicide. The spirit is then given permission to passively witness the mental conditions and thoughts of other actors in its earlier life.

Back in the real world, the story is set in the surroundings of Tiptur, Channarayapatna and Hassan - as Bhyrappa is wont to do. I suppose he has this particular choice of region for a couple of reasons. The first and most obvious is that Bhyrappa is himself intimately aware of these settings - given that he grew up there. The second one is that he probably finds it convenient to get the necessary scaffolding for his story out of the way as quickly as possible before grappling with the more fundamental issues. To explain it a little further, Bhyrappa is keen on exploring the universal in the particular. The structure of a novel demands that he give a certain "believability" to his characters and the plot. If he chose a place different from his customary surroundings, he would have to do research about a topic that he is peripherally interested in at best. By using a place he is already familiar with he achieves a wonderful narrative very easily and can set his mind to digging deep into each character's innards. Look at sArtha for a diametrically opposite kind of novel. Set in ancient India, Bhyrappa had to probably do enormous amounts of research to lend authenticity to the story. Here, he gets to the core quickly.

When the soul that has committed suicide is given a chance to explore the minds of its acquaintances as a silent witness, it chooses to do so. The characters range from the silent but thoughtful rAmakrishnayya (reminds you of shrInivAsa shrotri of vamshavrikSha), his wife, a money-minded Sukanya (a predecessor to tantu's kAnti) and their son Ganesha.  Manjayya is a coconut farm owner in the same village. Nagappa, the epitome of artha as an independent value, is Sukanya's father and Satyappa the Gandhian is Ramakrishna's brother-in-law. Savitri is the daughter of the house. Mention has to be made of Lakku and Sarojakshi who bring about profound changes in the story.

Continuing in the aftermath of a murder trial, the story serially narrates different events from the perspectives of different characters. Of course, we, as readers are also sAkShis in the book. It is quite difficult to go into the character without narrating some of the plot and that conflicts with the objective of this post - getting readers from this post to the book. However, the questions it raises are worthy of examination.

What is truth/falsehood? Are these absolute values?

Is concealment different from lying? Why do some people keep lying?

Is stating a truth a different way the same as lying?

Is it better to control one's base desires and falter occasionally or go all out in self-gratification?

What is the basis of carnal desire? Is it just the body or is there something else to it? When would it stop?

What is better - to have base desires secretly without satisfaction or treat it the same as any other bodily affliction?

Are suicides primarily caused by disproportionately morbid amplification of a momentary setback without a thought for the bigger picture?

What is Dharma in action? How do you recognize it?

The notion of purity and conversely, of sin- how much of the body and how much of the mind?

Is abstinence a virtue? How so or why not?

The Ego and its power

Manjayya is so much of this world - we see a lot of his likes everywhere - as anonymous statistics and reports in newspapers and sometimes in ourselves. Yet, there is something other-worldly about him; for no where else can we see such single minded self-indulgence. Manjayya is on par with a Duryodhana or a rAvaNa - Note that these characters are
not simple minded "evil-doers" - they are complex and layered. Manjayya is like that. Bhyrappa has created several characters - but Manjayya ranks with the highest, of course from a purely literary stand-point. SLB portrays Manjayya so convincingly that at times, there is no way to refute his arguments.

The situation of Satyappa is very similar to that of Praneshacharya in URA's Samskara. The difference between URA and SLB is basically in what happens to each of their characters after they succumb to desire. Praneshacharya becomes a libertine whereas Satyappa is mortified. Satyappa is shaken out of his ivory tower and is ostracized by his family and society. However, Satyappa himself does not change - he sees the folly of his earlier ways and uses his fall (his perception) to achieve more focus on his life's mission.

Nagappa is another finely etched character. While self-indulgence for Manjayya is through bodily desires, the miserly Nagappa devotes his life to amassing wealth. Bhyrappa portrays the extreme nature of his desire brilliantly.

Sarojakshi is an intriguing character as well. While her similarity to Manjayya is alluded to on the surface, it ends right there. Her character could not be more different from that of Manjayya. Towards the end, the face off between the two shows how different they really are. While Manjayya epitomizes single pointed kAma, Saroja shows how kAma could be spread across pursuits.

The story progresses towards a climax with two dramatic events. Between AvaraNa and sAkShi, there is a similarity of motif in the brutal nature of the first event. The second event - a revelation - is not as brutal but more disruptive to the characters and the reader. The plot twists are both unexpected and powerful, impacting both the reader and the story.

However, Bhyrappa offers a vision of what he sees as ideal. For him, the ideal of disinterested karma as a tool to purify the mind is an important one. His focus, as seen in other works, on nirlepa karma (tantu, dATu) is echoed here as well.  The following sentence of Shankara in his introduction to the gItAbhAShya - "dvividho hi vedokto dharmaH | pravRttilakShaNo nivRttilakShaNashcha|" ("..Dharma is two fold, one characterized by activity and the other by renunciation") finds an echo in Bhyrappa's characters.

The two faces of his ideal are Ramakrishna and Satyappa. The former - distant, worthy of respect and immersed in Vedanta - is in the tradition of nivRtti dharma. The latter -  more down to earth, realistic and worthy of sympathy - is in the pravRtti path.

Bhyrappa leaves us with a question - "what is the origin of lies?"

To summarize, Bhyrappa is in his element here - so much so that the reader does not care for the name of the author when reading it. For all readers of serious literature, don't miss this.

PS: My apologies for writing this review in English. In hindsight, a review in Kannada would have been a lot better. Also, it seems that this book has been translated into both Hindi and English.

ReiserFS developer convicted: should commodities have a moral value?

Hans Reiser guilty of first-degree murder | Tech news blog - CNET News.com

It feels somewhat strange as I have a Suse 9 box with the file system developed by Hans Reiser. And this is because I chose to go with the default.

I got to know of this conviction only today - nearly two years after he was charged. The interesting question is - did people change file systems after this news?

Which brings me to a larger question: how much importance do people attach to the moralities of the originators of the software they use? Taking it even further - when people consume any commodity, is importance attached to the perceived morality of the producer/source? Should it be?

For one of the Indian perspectives on it, I now recall an anecdote from the life of a holy man (I don't recall where I got this story from and I remember it only broadly). This holy man used to deliver illuminating lectures to his disciples every day. One day, however, the holy man's lectures were not well delivered and his utterances were far from normal. A curious disciple who normally followed his teacher everywhere started investigating. Nothing had changed that day apart from the saint eating his favorite vegetable during lunch. When the cook was asked where he got that vegetable from, he mentioned the name of a person. When that vegetable vendor was asked about the source of that vegetable he confessed that he had stolen those from a garden. The disciple then warned the cook to ensure that all food came from good sources.

This perspective takes the morality of the source to be very important.

If this view were followed everywhere, we shouldn't be consuming half of what we consume nowadays (food, newspapers, television, water.. you name it).

Certain follow on questions:
Will you continue patronizing a store that sells quality stuff for really low prices but the owner of which is unscrupulous?
Will you continue patronizing a restaurant where the food is not bad but whose owner was convicted for involvement in illegal activities? (I know I stopped going to such a place)

Is the software question on the same level as these two?

I don't think so - because I believe Reiser didn't get monetary or other benefits from my use of his software (open source). But my patronizing the restaurant would have given money to that owner to indulge in further illegal activities and so I stopped.

Am I right here? Am I being needlessly fussy here? It would be pretty interesting to get some other perspectives on this.

Who do you believe?

We had the Tehelka sting operation a few days ago that apparently "proved" the complicity of Narendra Modi's government in the 2002 Gujarat riots. You can find posts about it here and here. The posts pointed to by the links in the previous sentence take Tehelka's sting to be true. I too was much disturbed on seeing statements from some violent people "stung" by Tehelka. And though I don't like Tehelka for their generally sensationalist stance, this story seemed to hard not believe in.

And now, you have several people doubting the "expose". You can look for the basis of the doubt with some relevant links here and here.

Each side has plenty of points to prove its case. Now the question is - who do you believe? In other words, what is the truth? I, for one, am stumped.

I feel that the English media in India are unscrupulous mercenary agents, pandering sometimes to even anti-India interests. But the freedom of media is important for any democracy. How can anybody guarantee this precious freedom without the people themselves being informed? And how can people get informed without significant help from the media? People watch channels of their choice which will continue to feed their viewers what the channels feel fit to telecast. And this will lead to groups of people completely at loggerheads with each other as they feel that their take on any incident is the "right" one and the "other" side simply doesn't "know".

Imagine the leftists - smiling knowing condescending smiles at the great unwashed brute "rightists" and seeing them as animals. At the same time, imagine people from say, the sangh-parivar glaring at leftists, seeing them as traitors that have no respect for the country's Hindu traditions and as a group of trouble-makers that wants everybody to stay in poverty for their selfish political gains. Think of any two such groups. The disagreement between them is just too much for any reconciliation. It is as if these people came from enemy countries.

Can there be a middle ground at all?

Friendly thoughts

Today was yet another day. Traffic was as usual on the roads and work - as thick and fast as it could get. As I traveled across the city, an uncommonly happy group of people caught my attention. They seemed to be friends and seemed to be immensely enjoying each other's company.

That got me thinking. About myself; the friends I had and luckily have in my life; through school, college, work and outside; and good and bad times during all of them. I also thought about how "friends" change - at least with me - through the times and how it shows what sort of people we all are.

The earliest persons I regarded as friends were my next door neighbors - a girl and a boy. Just playing all sorts of games from Cricket, ais-pais, jUTATa and kunTe bille. We were just happy to play with each other. No comparisons as to who scored how many marks and what school we attended. Looking back, I think that we were too young and innocent to care. But it feels warm and fuzzy to be thinking about that time now. I was closest to them till I was about seven years old when the boy moved to another place. As I got older, I started playing more cricket with other boys and I became less and less friends with the girl. We used to speak to each other and all that; but then she was no fun to be with as she didn't know how to play cricket. I lost all touch when our family moved too. And now, I don't know where both of them are. Married? Mostly. Children? Probably. What did they study? No idea.

It is quite amazing that people we regarded as closest to us during several years of our lives get out of our lives and become irrelevant. Almost...

School was similar. I had a lot of fun with several friends. We visited each others' houses and generally did many things together. Silly games and competitions - but those were all good from where I see them now. After school, again, I vanished from their lives and they from mine. I did come across one or the other once a while, but that warmth was not there. I might be the culprit, but the fact is that I don't see that glow I once saw in them. I actually know where a couple of them live; but I don't visit them. I assume they can come to my house too; but I have never seen anybody. Initiating a conversation is a great trait (Rama is supposed to have had this trait) that I unfortunately lack.

As I got older, I found that the filter of life filters away people that are not of one's type. You see that the people you get close to share similar interests as you. It dawned upon me that it is not in vain that we have the old adage - "Birds of the same feather flock together".

Another cliche that is completely true in the case of friends is "Out of sight is out of mind". This happened when I moved from India to the US and from the US back to India. The first time, I lost many friends in India. Lost because I never found them the same way again. When returning to India, I "lost" several friends in the US because the relationship is not the same anymore.

There are a few people, who are different. Even though you haven't met them for a long time, they are the same towards you as they were when you met them and I am saying this in a good way. And I too behave similarly when I am with them. But these are only a few. You don't need to speak with them everyday or even once a month - but when you speak to them - you know that it is the same person. But this special relationship is not with everybody.

People change. I am sure several people see me as a changed person; though I consider myself the same as far as I remember (I am sure this is how everybody sees himself/herself).

Friends are special people. It takes a special person to become a friend and as well as to get a friend. It also takes a certain kind of unselfishness to be a friend and to have a friend too. It requires one to not be lazy to diligently keep the path of friendship free of thorns.

I sometimes felt that it became too much effort to call somebody especially if they didn't call you back as often! And because of this laziness, I might have lost several fine people as my friends.

As is my wont, I will conclude this reflection with a samskrit subhAShita (from Bhartrhari's nIti shatakam):

priiNaati yaH sucharitaH pitaraM sa putro
yadbhartureva hitamichchhati tat.h kalatram.h |
tanmitramApadi sukhe cha samakriyam
etattrayaM jagati puNyakRto labhante ||

A rough translation is as follows:
He is indeed a son who is endowed with good character and pleases the father.
She indeed is the wife who wishes the best of her husband only.
That is indeed a friend who is the same in happiness as well as in distress.
These three are obtained by those in this world who are endowed with merit (puNya).

I can't agree more with him.

"An idle mind is the devil's workshop".

Two lines

This story is about a man. A man that could be anybody. A man who led a regular life. He had a loving wife and two wonderful children. With his amiable personality,he was liked by all. He also had a good job. Everybody at work and outside looked up to him.

One day he came home looking glum. Ever quick to notice, his wife asked him, “Is there anything wrong?”

He just nodded his head and sank into a sofa. Everything seemed lost.

“Our company will be restructured. My division will also be likely downsized” he replied in a way as if that had already happened.

His wife was more practical. She replied in an attempt to lighten his mood – “Is that all? I thought of things far graver” and resumed her work.

He didn’t like his wife’s non-concern. He raised his voice – “You don’t seem to understand! Do you know what can happen? Life as we lead it will not be possible! You can’t have your car and bungalow – you remember the high EMI payments, don’t you? We need a job to pay all that and more!”

At the end of his retort, his voice had come high pitched. His wife became alarmed but managed to calmly say “But you still haven’t lost your job, have you?”

Their children – a five year old girl and a seven year old boy – had worried looks on their faces, almost ready to cry. His wife glared at him. He checked his tone, while she herded them to their room giving them some books and toys.

“No. But the writing is on the wall. The announcement seems to be a mere formality now from what I’ve heard”, he talked in a calmer fashion now.

“You can find a new job if that happens. You are experienced enough” she replied from across the house.

“But it won’t be the same! I’m so used to working there for the past ten years. I’ll have to put in more work if I go to another company”, he pleaded as his wife returned to the living room.

“I know. But haven’t many others moved?”

“Let’s stop this for now” he muttered and went to his room.

The rest of the evening was a dull affair. He ate a silent dinner all by himself and lay down in his bed, feeling sorry for himself at not being sympathized with.

He couldn’t sleep for a long time. She came to the room and without a word, lay on the bed, away from him. From her breathing, he figured that she had fallen asleep.

His gaze fell on a picture of Lord Ganesha.

“God! Why are you making me go through this? Everybody else seems to be so content. She doesn’t even sympathize with my plight. Who do I go to?” he cried mentally.

He felt Ganesha wink at him. “What do you want?”, the elephant-headed being seemed to ask him.

He prayed in his mind – “Please make my problems smaller”.

“Are you sure this is what you want?” He asked him.

“Yes, Lord!”

“So be it!”

Our man felt relieved at this. Taking this to be a sign, he was able to fall asleep soon.

He was soon woken up in the night. His wife was shaking him.

“Wake up! We need to get her to a hospital”

“What happened?” he mumbled sleepily.

“She is vomiting uncontrollably.”

He started up pulling off his covers. He saw his daughter, a tender child of five and touched her. Her skin was scorching hot. He immediately wore whatever he could lay his hands on and ran towards his car. His wife held their daughter. His son was panicky – “What happened to Chikki?” he inquired anxiously.

He started the car quickly after everyone was seated. His daughter looked emaciated. The hospital was a good four kilometers away.

The car moved furiously. When he had driven past three intersections, a drunkard suddenly came walking in his path. Trying to avoid him, he swerved violently, only to lose control. The car somersaulted a few times and hit a wall. Everything suddenly was noisy and silent.

He couldn’t figure out what had happened, as dazed as he was. Through the smashed wind-shield he saw a few people running toward him.

The situation began to dawn upon him. He tried to turn his neck look at his family – but was physically immobile in spite of his best attempts. A few people tried to extricate the family from the wreck while he helplessly watched.

He saw the motionless body of his daughter taken out of the car. His wife and son were bleeding profusely. Using all his strength, he tried to get out of the car in one movement.

He opened his eyes to find everything dark around him. It took him a full twenty seconds to realize that he was lying in his bedroom, on the floor, looking at the ceiling; his body covered with sweat.

The breathing form of his wife on the bed came into view as he turned aside.

It didn’t take long after that to realize that had been dreaming. In a moment, his horror had changed to relief. He couldn’t believe it. He ran to the other room and found his children sleeping peacefully. Ecstatic, he ran all over the house. Rushing to his wife, he hugged and kissed her like one possessed. While she woke up bewildered, he ran to his children and coddled them with many hugs and kisses; they woke up with a start.

He turned on the lights and plopped into the sofa crying; tears of happiness flowing down his cheeks.

His son’s puzzle book lay on the floor. The page was turned up. He read the puzzle – “How do you make a line shorter without erasing it?”

He reflected with closed eyes and bowed gratefully.

Ganesha’s picture in his bedroom seemed to sport a mischievous smile.

What's in a number and other rambling thoughts

The title of this post may be misleading. This is not about mathematical numbers. In fact, mathematical numbers have a lot in them. This is about those "non-mathematical" ones; though numbers have to be inherently mathematical.

Also, this is not about numbers that have their place in nature. I agree that 365 (give and take a couple of days) days make a year and around 9 months is the human gestation period. But my post is not about that.

My post is about man-made numbers and whether we really need to attach so much importance to them. For example, the papers in Bangalore today scream - that this is one day in a thousand years that has 7'O clock, 7 minutes, 7 seconds, 7th day of the 7th month of the year 2007 and it turned out to be a saptami (7th day) in the Indian lunar calendar as well. And so, this is a great day and so on. In fact, last year we did have 6:06:06 6th June 2006. And next year will have a bunch of 8s and so on till 2012.

Now for a different take on it. 2007 is the year according to the Christian calendar. According to the Muslim calendar, this year is numbered something else. And in our Hindu calendar, it is sarvajit samvatsara and the number of the year in vikrama samvat is something else. What would happen if you calculate your date according to any other calendar? Would this headline be still valuable? And what if you measured your time in something like "radians" instead of hours and minutes? Are we mistaking things for units in which they are measured?

Then, you have the other one. Celebrities all over India wanted to get the Taj Mahal in the seven wonders of the world. Now my question to the organizers is : Why seven wonders? Why not 6? What did the other poor numbers like 11 do? Why not say, 35 or 53? Why is 7 any special?

For a number to be special to me, it has to have some counterpart in nature, a counterpart in something that is not man-made. "pi" is one such number. "e" is one such constant. "c" is another one. "h" is yet another. The number 15 as the period in days of our moon's waxing/waning cycle is another number. Two such cycles make a month. A year is fine as it signifies one revolution of the earth around the sun.

But Top Seven and Top 10 and Top 50 or Top 100 seem to be just made up.  What are the organizers trying to convey? That if the Taj Mahal is in the top 7, it is good and that otherwise, it is not? What if the Taj gets the 8th position? Will it stop being as attractive? In the seven wonders case, it looks like people are just having a good time promoting the Taj Mahal and all - which is fine, but is the hype justified?

Next you have the make or break numbers - ranks in education. The ranks themselves are fine, because they just correspond to the indices of a set of sorted marks. But ranks have notions of superiority and inferiority associated with them. The first ranker is somehow perceived as "superior" to the second and so on. But the examinations try to measure ability in a particular field. Rank and ability may not correlate well enough. The first ranker will be better than the ten thousandth one. But the fifth ranker may actually have more ability than the first ranker. But how else would you measure ability? It is an imperfect measuring system, but unavoidable, I feel.

Hierarchy is in our world whether we like it or not. Equality, the politically correct notion, does not have a natural counterpart. Ranks and numbers and our fascination for those reinforce this notion. Isn't it just easier in a limited period of time to see the "7 wonders of the world" rather than make the ranking ourselves? It is just that in these things, we trust the judgment of our fellow beings. We do that implicitly in other things anyway.

When we see two things as different, we begin seeing hierarchy. We can't just see two things and not have an implicit hierarchy formed in our mind. Dvaita philosophy - expounded by shrI madhva, in fact, declares 5 types of differences to be Absolute. Difference between God and the soul, difference between souls, difference between God and inanimate matter, difference between souls and inanimate matter and finally the difference between inanimate matter itself. And with a multitude of souls, Dvaita has a hierarchy of deities with Hari (Lord VishNu) being at the peak.

But who is it that sees the difference? We claim to know the world - but we just know what our senses and intellect tell us. The perceiver is still not "known". What does it mean for the knower to know oneself? This is the domain of several of our philosophies and not all of them are in agreement. Buddhism says there is no abiding soul. Advaita says that the soul is the same as the world and God. Dualist schools (most of the others including mainstream Abrahamic religions such as Christianity, Judaism and Islam, our dvaita and vishiShTAdvaita) say that there is a Supreme Spirit called God and that It and the individual soul are different.

Isn't it strange that we don't know who we are, but, like in this post, ponder about the world and what we see?

The Bhagavad Gita and the example of the hedgehog

I was browsing Jim Collins's site - a great site for management enthusiasts and generally for people who want to get some good insights into management - when I came across this story of the fox and the hedgehog.

You can find that story here

While reading the story, the following shloka of the gItA echoed in my mind almost in a flash.

Lord Krishna says in the gItA:
vyavasAyAtmikA buddhirekeha kurunandana |
bahushAkhAhyanantAshcha buddhayo.avyavasAyinAm ||

A rough translation - the buddhi of the industrious is one pointed. But the intellects of the unindustrious are many branched.

It may be also interpreted as - the intellect (buddhi roughly translated) that is single-pointed yields to industriousness. But if the intellect is numerously branched, it leads to one becoming an "avyavasAyi" or an unindustrious one.

Reading the shoka, I recognize myself to be an "avyavasAyi" as my intellect is spread across too many things to be able to do something meaningful in a single area.

Going back to Jim Collins's example/parable, it looks like I am a fox. I may be smart, but definitely ineffective when compared with hedgehog-like people.

The fox-hedgehog/one-pointed-many-directional intellect idea seems to be applicable on multiple levels.

We can see that single-mindedness yields success as a student, happiness in the family and a prosperous career.

Single-mindedness yields benefits even on the spiritual plane. A seeker sticking to one particular path that suits him most succeeds whereas a dabbler in different traditions will gain more intellectual knowledge, but will fall short of that ultimate goal of True Understanding.

Upon reflection, we see that what is said here is commonsense. If we lavish our attention on multiple goals, some of which may be mutually contradictory, we become too weak to concentrate on anything substantial and failure becomes inevitable. However, if we concentrate on a few essential things, the chance of succeeding becomes that much higher.

A simple truth, but really difficult to implement. It is so for me at least. I should try and minimize my areas of action so that I can be successful in a few. But numerous interests drag me hither and thither so that I just accomplish something minimal. This minimization becomes possible by mindful prioritizing. But we have to keep prioritizing things ceaselessly to succeed. It is pretty difficult to do that and needs a lot of mental energy. But in perseverance is the secret (and the difficulty). Doing it one week may be easy, but doing it on every day of one's life is pretty challenging. One has to be really strong-willed to succeed.

As Krishna, again so pithily, states :
abhyAsena tu kaunteya vairAgyena cha gR^ihyate |

By practice and dispassion, the mind can be controlled.

Again, simple to intellectually understand - but the implications of this statement are profound. And internalizing it is not exactly simple.

The gItA is indeed a valuable medicine chest - we go to it when we are unwell and upon following the Lord's prescription, we become well again.

Sometimes, though, we need the sugar coating of a story and some lively language to ingest a bitter pill (as in Jim Collins's article). But we see that the gItA within the mahAbhArata has already done it for us. This is not to belittle Jim Collins's wonderful insights, but only to recognize an alternate and older (read time-tested) encyclopedic source. I mentioned the mahAbhArata because, to understand the gItA, one must have a fairly good idea on the events that had transpired before the delivery of the teaching. I feel that aspiring and practising managers will benefit immensely by a serious study of the mahAbhArata (with or without the gItA in it).

Coincidentally, now is mArgashIrSha, the month in which gItA-jayantI (the anniversary of the descent of the gItA) falls - on the 11th day of the bright fortnight.

Reflecting on the teachings of the gItA will do well for us both in this life and beyond.

Why do such things happen?

HoustonChronicle.com - Hindu killed while meditating in park honored

Akhil Chopra was killed when he was apparently meditating in a Houston park. His boss at work said that Akhil Chopra was quite deep in meditation; so deep as to not even hear a robber. The robber shot him at point blank range.

I really find it difficult to understand how someone could shoot an innocent person and that too when he was meditating peacefully. What sort of a crazed person could this be?

But the deed has been done. I don't know if the perpetrator of the crime has any remorse or not. But I feel a deep sense of sorrow at this incident, though I don't know Akhil Chopra.

What has humankind come to? On one hand we have senseless violence like this whereas you have such spontaneous outpouring of concern from the other end. But even one act like this tarnishes the entire society as society is partly, if not wholly, responsible for the creation of such criminals.

All I can do is to pray for the peace of the departed soul. But questions remain. Why did this happen? What sort of a person could have done this? How can we prevent such things?

History has known tyrants and sadists of an even worse nature. One example I read about in an Amar Chitra Katha book is that of the Huna tyrant Mihirakula. When his army was navigating a mountain pass, an elephant accidentally slipped and plunged to its death. This man, instead of expressing concern, was intoxicated. He then began pushing more elephants so that he could have his 'high'. What kind of a man could that be? There have been many tyrants throughout history in Attila, Genghiz Khan, Idi Amin, Hitler, Stalin and even in Mahmud Ghazni, Ghauri and so on.

An article I read on redherring.com talks about recent research that people are not happy just because of their material possessions but are so because of their relative affluence over other people they know. If this is true, isn't this a sad commentary on human condition? If their happiness can be made "higher" by making someone less happier, people end up doing that. Is that not the seed of sadism?

Humans endowed with their so-called intellects need more avenues to feel happy and engaged. Their intellects give them new ways too. Drugs are one way. Torturing fellow beings is another. But animals indulge in violence only when they need food or are defending themselves. Aren't animals better than such humans? So isn't calling a particularly cruel man an animal wrong?

The perpetrator could probably be just a stupid teenager, getting his highs on video games or from violent movies. In video games one can kill and die without any real side-effects. In America, it is pretty easy to get a gun (at least much easier than in India). So a gun-toting teenager is walking in a Houston park. He sees this poor guy meditating; he decides in an impulse to show his power (to himself or to his accompanying friend) over Akhil Chopra by killing him with his gun. He presses the trigger a couple of times and the act is done. A video game or a movie could have caused the mind of the perpetrator to be so numb to reality that Akhil Chopra's death might not even have registered in his mind. He probably got a small "high" from this. All this for a small "high"? Akhil's family devastated because of one man's high?

Violent movies and video games are partly to blame. They are only partly to blame because they wouldn't have been made if there was no demand. But crime has existed even before movies and video games. Did not these tyrants exist before these technical advancements? As I think and write through this, I am more and more reminded of the analysis that I read in Freakonomics. The factors that make a person are first and foremost genetic. Upbringing is secondary. But then there are the unknowns. In Freakonomics especially, we see a teen gang member becoming a professor, whereas someone from a "better" family turned out to be the Unabomber! It becomes an increasingly difficult problem to solve intellectually. It looks like we can seek refuge only in Karma and adRShTa for an explanation.

Akhil's episode reminds me of Lord Krishna's departure. When Krishna was meditating in a forest, a hunter shoots an arrow at Krishna's foot taking it to be the mouth of a deer. Krishna died a slow death from the wound, but not before consoling the hunter. While the whole episode is immensely saddening, Akhil's departure from the world shows how great a soul he must be (not must have been because the soul is immortal).

May Almighty grant peace to the departed soul!

Srirangapatna and Tipu Sultan

I had written this post up as a very longish one - but Firefox crashed on me and I hadn't saved a draft! I wasn't inclined on typing the whole thing up again - but I will try typing a much shorter version of what I wanted to say. IE otoh is far more reliable. Firefox 1.0 is not stable at all.

This post was inspired by a trip to the Mysore-Srirangapatna area. We went from Bangalore to Kengal, from there to Nimishamba and Chamundi Hills and then returned to Bangalore via Srirangapatna. We had a brief refreshing stopover at Gosai Ghat where the kAverI river flows softly.

The region we visited last Sunday was once ruled by Tipu Sultan - the son of Haider Ali who managed to vest power from the ruling Wodeyars of Mysore. Tipu Sultan was called the Tiger of Mysore before he fell to British bullets during the fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799. He is widely acknowledged in several parts of India and by modern Indian historians as the first freedom fighter who fought against the British.

When we reached Srirangapatna, it was around 7PM. The last pUja of the evening was being performed and the main deities - shrI ranganAtha and shrI-ranganAyakI were resplendent. The atmosphere was charged with devotion towards the Emperor and Empress of the Universal Stage. The pillared hall brought back memories of a bygone era when devotees thronged the temple and illuminated the then electricity-free temple with their devotional fervor. As luck would have it, there was a power cut when we were inside the temple and it made us see how life was without electricity. But the Lamp in the Deity's Sanctum Sanctorum provided us with much needed light - just as the Almighty is the only source of Light during troubling darknesses of life.

When returning to Bangalore, I saw remnants of fortifications around the temple town and this immediately brought Tipu to mind. The interesting thing is that Tipu, though much loved and respected in the Old Mysore area which he ruled, is widely reviled in other parts of South India. It is especially so in Kerala where the mention of Tipu's name brings terror and sadness to the locals' hearts even now. Tipu is supposed to have had thousands of people - Hindus and Christians - hanged from trees to give a very public display of his authority and tyranny. He is also notorious for converting a large chunk of the local Hindus to Islam by the sword - which is the reason for a substantial Muslim population in Kerala today.

But he has committed an equally if not graver atrocity closer home. This was in the temple town of Melkote.

Melkote is a centre of Vishishtadvaitic learning (Vishishtadvaita being one of the principal schools of Vedanta philosophy). This was the place to which Ramanujacharya regarded as the founder of the Vishishtadvaita philosophy sought refuge in from the persecution of the Shaivite Chola rulers. A temple dedicated to Cheluvanarayana Swamy ( a form of Vishnu) flourishes there even today. Known as a center of learning in those days, Tipu caused the place to become almost desolate.

A branch of Iyengars known as Mandyam had made Melkote their home. They had apparently pledged allegiance to the Hindu kings of Mysore. They were quite a learned sect too. On Deepavali day in 1783, Tipu's army descended on the town and massacred close to eight hundred people. What the immediate reason was, I don't know. But this kind of a massacre - just thinking about it - chills me to the bone.

On the way back from Srirangapatna, this incident haunted me - I don't know for what reason. I thought of what a happy day it might have been when Melkote was getting ready for the festive occasion. When Tipu's army went there, most people might not have bothered to run for their lives as they themselves were a non-violent bunch. When this kind of killing began - how horrified they must have been! Most of the families were destroyed and the temple apparently became a ghost town - houses without people, tanks running dry, uncultivated land! During those years, eight hundred was a pretty large number for the population of a town. How mean and cruel must Tipu have been to inflict such a horror on his own subjects!

In sad memory of that horrible incident, Mandyam Iyengars apparently do not celebrate Deepavali even today. I can imagine their state of mind when they realize that their forefathers were butchered at the hands of an inhuman band of soldiers.

This incident is enough in my mind to conclude that Tipu was a bloodthirsty tyrant. But there have apparently been worse incidents attributed to Tipu in Kerala. He is not well-regarded by people of Chitradurga whose ruler Madakarinayaka was killed by Tipu's army.

Yet, Tipu is regarded highly as a 'secular' king and even as a freedom fighter. Why, even my father regards Tipu as quite a good human being. It is not the case that my father does not know. Tipu had a Hindu, Purnaiah as his Diwan (Chief Minister). He had quite a few Hindus in his army. There is proof to show that he had donated land and money to the temples of Srirangapatna, Nanjangud and even Sringeri. The novel - the sword of Tipu sultan - by Bhagwan Gidwani was written with Tipu as its hero. And so were plays and novels in Kannada. So there is data which can be construed to show that Tipu was a good human being. So was Tipu a schizophrenic then?

I need to get more information that conclusively proves Tipu as a tyrant or as a well-intentioned ruler. I suppose I have to ask more knowledgeable people about that.

But the image of a festive town turning into a graveyard in a single day continues to haunt me.

From Joyce to vAk

Author James Joyce's short stories: Dubliners

I had heard of James Joyce as the author of the apparently utterly incomprehensible 'Finnegan's Wake' from which the term Quark was taken by Murray Gell-Mann and subsequently used to denote a class of fundamental particles. There is this category of people in Bangalore that prides itself immensely on its trivia knowledge. I used to be a part of this group - but was simultaneously an outsider too - for they were more Western in their outlook and I was more rooted to my traditions. Nothing wrong about both. So the name James Joyce conjures up some weird images in me. But he was never a litterateur/author to me - till about now.

Three or four years ago during my stay in the US, this name began to be heard more and more. That may be because that was around the time I began frequenting the libraries there. And Joyce was mentioned in the most reverential and hushed tones. After reading observations that "Ulysses" was the best English Novel of the twentieth century I was intrigued to say the least. How could I have skipped him? But then when I actually ventured to look at the first couple of pages - the book threw me off. With a name like Buck Milligan mouthing something in Latin - I did not feel like reading it at all.

After this, I read of many people considering Ulysses as something to be read once in their lifetime and telling others that they had in fact read it. One of my acquaintances (I don't know him well enough to call him a friend) - who is a voracious reader - also had the same idea. My interest perked up again.

So a couple of days ago, I actually made bold to visit a James Joyce admirer site and saw that it required the same level of preparation and study as a complete baccalaureate course in English. To fully understand Ulysses - I apparently needed to study Homer (as Ulysses and its characters is apparently parody Odysseus) and the Bible of course and a host of other works. I then thought if Joyce had ever written something shorter and simpler and landed up on the site featured in this blog.

I read "Araby" and "A Little cloud" in a matter of twenty minutes. I must say now that Joyce is definitely a great story teller. The narration is light but does not allow you to lose focus. The choice of words is exquisite. The character development is fantastic. I could clearly identify with the boy in Araby (I am sure every boy in his adolescence must have had a similar experience). Little Chandler is something else too. Both are amazingly well-crafted stories by a master craftsman. So my next job is to read through Dubliners.

After this I will probably look at the Portrait of the Artist as a young man. I will look at Ulysses only after that.

Taking a step back, I see that Language and Literature are amazing windows to one's mind. As much as one can say "bhAShe oraTu yAna" (a line in a poem by Dr. GS Shivarudrappa, a renowned Kannada poet) - Language is a crude vehicle - it is still a vehicle and quite a useful one at that. I never looked at Language this way till now. Good literature being the finest expression in a language has the ability to look and talk directly to the reader's innermost mind. From being a caveman, Man has surely traveled beyond the edge of the universe to his inner mind. Isn't the inner mind of Man farther than the darkest corner of the Universe ? Language is trying to bring a light into the depths of the mind. Which is probably why a kannada poet said that "mAtembudu jyOtirlinga" (the spoken word is indeed the Divine Light).

Language is rightly praised in sanAtana dharma. vAk or speech has been identified by Vedic seers to be of 4 kinds - parA, pashyantI, madhyamA and vaikharI. parA is the Absolute and that streams down from the undifferentiated heights of mental clarity to normal speech (vaikharI). It is really amazing that so many great truths and nuggets we see in literature have come down from the parA vAk itself. The insight in a statement makes the source of the statement quite evident. It depends on the reader's culture and refinement too.

The study of literature has another wonderful benefit. It is a lasting intellectual and mental stimulation which can be had by Nature or sublime music. Most of the other pursuits have this fleeting feeling. They leave the experiencer hollow once a pursuit is complete. The pursuit of Literature is enriching by itself. The after-effects are desirable too. This is one of the few heavenly delights available in this earthly life.
